Named for the train station that was already in place prior to the land run of 1889, Oklahoma Station was officially the name of the city until [[Stanley Draper]] began lobbying for the name to be officially changed to Oklahoma City in the 1920s. He created a petition which was signed by 25,000 people (over 1/4 of the citizens of the city) to change the name. Eventually the federal government agreed to change the official postmark to Oklahoma City.
