Oklahoma Station was the original name of Oklahoma City. Named for the train station that was already in place prior to the land run of 1889, Oklahoma Station was officially the name of the city until Stanley Draper began lobbying for the name to be officially changed to Oklahoma City in 1923. He created a petition which was signed by 25,000 people (over 1/4 of the citizens of the city) to change the name. Eventually the federal government agreed to change the official postmark to Oklahoma City.
