Born in Frederick, Maryland in 1839, George Jefferson Shields was a hotelier and postmaster in Albany, Texas before coming to Oklahoma Territory. After arriving to Oklahoma City, Shields became a successful land developer on the south side of the city. Nicknamed "Satan" Shields, he died in Oklahoma City in 1915.
