Dr. Joseph Fife Messenbaugh, the twelfth mayor of Oklahoma City, was born in Fairview, Missouri in 1873. Prior to moving to Oklahoma Dr. Messenbaugh graduated from Missouri Medical College in St. Louis. He came to Oklahoma City in 1900 and started a practice as an ear, nose, and throat specialist. In 1902 Messenbaugh was elected county coroner. During his time as coroner he presided over the investigation of the death of Red Kelley, the man who killed Robert Ford (who was famous for killing Jesse James). He became mayor of Oklahoma City in 1905. After his stint as mayor, Dr. Messenbaugh continued his medical practice until his death in 1928. He is buried at Rose Hill Burial Park.
