Carl Magee was the inventor of the parking meter. First conceptualized in 1931, the final design was created by Magee, engineer Gerald A. Hale, and Oklahoma State University engineering professor H.G. Thuesen. The MacNick Company of Tulsa began manufacturing the units, and on July 16, 1935, 175 parking meters were installed along 14 blocks of downtown Oklahoma City streets and began generating revenue for the City and solving parking disputes in the bustling downtown.
