John Shartel (1862-1926), born in Summit Township, Pennsylvania, was a teacher's son who moved to southern Kansas with his family after his father's return from the Civil War. After law school at Kansas State, he returned to Sedan, Kansas to teach, but caught boomer fever and made the land run in 1889. His real estate and law business struggled until he became organizing partner of the Metropolitan Railway Company in 1902. The streetcar was rarely financially viable and its receivership in the early 1920s was deemed instrumental in shortening Shartel's life. Shartel Avenue is named for him.
